Looking for the energy and excitement of a Charlotte Volleyball Media Day? I recently had the chance to work with the Cuthbertson High School Varsity Volleyball team to capture dynamic team portraits, individual athlete spotlights, and fun spirit-day images that showed off their pride on and off the court.

As a Charlotte senior photographer, I’ve always been a sports enthusiast at heart. My photography journey actually began on the sidelines, capturing athletes in action long before I ever started working with seniors. That early love for documenting the intensity, pride, and pure energy of sports is something I’ve carried into my work today—especially when it comes to Media Day sessions.

This year, I had the privilege of photographing the Cuthbertson High School Varsity Volleyball team, and the session was everything Media Day should be: dynamic, fun, and full of spirit.

When planning this session, I wanted to make sure we captured a full range of images that the team could use all season long. We started with strong, dynamic team portraits that showcased their unity and determination. From there, we shifted to individual player images—giving every athlete their own spotlight moment.

But we didn’t stop there. We also created small group shots and fun, personality-driven images. Some of these were planned specifically with school spirit days and events in mind, giving the team a collection of ready-to-go content perfect for social media hype. This intentional mix of images meant that their gallery wasn’t just a set of posed photos—it was a full story of their team spirit.

What is a Spirit Day?

Spirit Days are themed school days designed to build excitement, showcase school pride, and bring athletes, students, and the entire community together. For teams, Spirit Days aren’t just fun—they’re a way to spark unity, boost energy before a big game, and get the crowd involved. They create memorable moments that connect athletes and fans beyond the court, field, or pitch.

3 Fun Spirit Day Ideas to Increase Crowd Unity

  1. Camo or Hippie Day
Themes like Camo Day or Hippie Day are always a hit because they let fans have fun with their outfits while giving the stands a unified, eye-catching look. Players can join in with playful accessories for warmups, and it sets the tone for a spirited, lighthearted game atmosphere.
  2. Gold-Out for a Cause
Sometimes, Spirit Days are about more than just fun—they’re about giving back. This year, the ladies selected a “Gold Out” night for Childhood Cancer Awareness, inviting the community to show their support by filling the gym with gold. It was a powerful way to rally fans and remind everyone that sports can make a difference off the court, too.
  3. Greek Night
For something completely different, try a theme like Greek Night. Fans show up in togas or Greek-inspired outfits, bringing a playful energy that instantly makes the crowd feel connected. It’s lighthearted, unique, and perfect for boosting student section hype.

Why Charlotte Volleyball Media Day is More Than Just Team Photos

For me, Media Day has never been about simply lining players up and snapping a few shots. It’s about celebrating what it means to be an athlete, honoring the friendships formed on the court, and creating images that reflect both the grit and the fun of high school sports.

The Cuthbertson Varsity Volleyball team brought all of that energy to their session. They showed up ready to laugh, ready to compete, and ready to create memories that will last long after the final match of the season.

As a former sports photographer turned Charlotte portrait photographer, these sessions are extra special. They give me the chance to combine my love for athletics with my passion for capturing milestone moments. For the athletes, the images are more than just photos—they’re a keepsake of their time in uniform, a celebration of their hard work, and a reminder of the season they gave their all.
