Mid March – Mid-April: Spring Awakens

The weather begins to warm, though it’s usually not hot—temperatures can fluctuate a lot, which makes deciding on outfits an interesting challenge! This time of year offers a perfect mix of fresh, vibrant colors, creating dreamy, sun-kissed backdrops.
By late March, trees start to bud, although the timing depends on how the winter plays out. The real showstoppers of the season—azaleas—burst into full bloom typically during the first two weeks of April, filling gardens with rich pinks, purples, and whites – and even bold reds. Delicate wisteria makes a brief but magical appearance in the last week of March to mid April, draping certain spots in soft lavender hues.

While you can find small wildflowers scattered throughout the area, the expansive wildflower fields are located at private venues and spots book up quickly. Sessions at these locations require reservations and can often book up as early as Feb-March for April May shoot dates. This time of year is also ideal for finding beautiful wildflower bouquets to add a burst of color to your session. Late May to early June is when summer gardens bloom fully, making it a great time for both natural beauty and vibrant downtown vibes.

Sometimes those strappy dresses can feel a little too chilly for the weather, so keeping a flexible mindset about your wardrobe—or booking very early in the season—is key if those outfits are a must-have. Weather can be unpredictable, so flexibility is essential. Peak fall color typically happens from early to mid-November, making warm-toned outfits perfect for matching the cozy autumn backdrop. When you inquire about booking your senior photos, you can come into the process in one of two ways — either with a specific season already in mind or with zero idea where to start (both are totally fine!). My job is to guide you from “I have no clue” to “this is exactly what I wanted.”
Here’s how we make that happen:
- Start with the season.

That way, you’re not requesting flower fields in February or hoping for deep fall tones in September. I recommend starting here so you can see which time of year matches the look you want. That way, your vision and the landscape will work together instead of fighting each other. - Match your season to the right package.
Once you know the season that feels right, we’ll look at which package best fits your requests. Every package includes different options for outfit changes, final image count, and travel to specific locations — so it’s important we line this up early. - Plan around the location + outfits.
After we’ve locked in your date and package, we’ll choose a location that pairs perfectly with your wardrobe. If you’re dying for a flower field, I’ll recommend outfits that will look their absolute best in that setting. But if you have a personal style you want to build your session around, we’ll start there and then find the perfect location to match. Example: If your grad always gravitates toward a fitted black dress with heels, we probably won’t choose a tall grassy field. First, those heels will disappear in the grass. Second, that sleek, city-ready dress will feel out of place in a rustic field backdrop. But in an urban rooftop setting with the Charlotte skyline? Total perfection.

Charlotte Photographer Seasonal Guide: Why the Right Timing Matters
