As a Charlotte milestone and family photographer—and a Waxhaw area mom myself—I’m always on the lookout for spots that are both picture-perfect and genuinely fun for all ages. This Family-Friendly Charlotte Summer Day loop is one my own family has done (more than once!) and it’s become one of my favorite recommendations for clients with little ones. It’s a total win for toddlers through early elementary kiddos: walkable, stroller-friendly, full of built-in moments for giggles, play, and even a sweet treat. 

From exploring the magic at ImaginOn, grabbing a snack or soft serve at The Market at 7th Street, to running wild (or cooling off) at First Ward Park, this Uptown mini-adventure is memory-making magic right in the heart of the city. 🛑 First Stop: ImaginOn – Kick Off Your Family-Friendly Charlotte Summer Day with Imagination

Start your day with a little magic! ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center is where stories literally come to life. It’s a dreamy combo of a children’s library and the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte—and recently named the #1 children’s library in the U.S. by Livability.com. From the moment you walk in, it’s clear this place is made just for kids.

Inside you’ll find:

  • A kid-focused library for ages 11 and under
  • Two theater spaces for live shows
  • A teen-only zone and multimedia studio
  • Interactive exhibits that change regularly
  • Classrooms for creative workshops and events

Whether your crew is here for storytime, books, or just to explore, it’s one of the most enriching (and fun!) stops in Charlotte. I adore capturing candid moments of wonder here—kids completely in their element.

Second Stop: The Market at 7th Street – Treat Time on Your Family-Friendly Charlotte Summer Day

Time to refuel! The Market at 7th Street is a cozy indoor food hall packed with local flavor. There’s something for everyone—but if you’ve got littles in tow, @socialcowtruck’s soft serve is almost always the highlight. Think rainbow sprinkles, sticky smiles, and lots of “can I have one more bite?” moments.

Grown-ups, you’re covered too—grab a coffee, a sandwich, or even a glass of wine. It’s air-conditioned, casual, and the perfect pit stop to recharge before the next round of fun.

Third Stop: First Ward Park – Wind Down Your Day

Wrap up your outing with some open-air playtime! Just a block away, First Ward Park is an Uptown gem with:

  • A splash pad for water fun
  • A kid-approved climbing structure
  • Walking paths and open green space
  • Nearby restrooms for quick changes or snack breaks

Let the kiddos run wild while you soak up the sunshine—or better yet, snap a few sweet photos as they play. Photographer tip: This park is stunning in golden hour light and makes a perfect casual backdrop for milestone sessions!

🚊 Bonus: Ride (or Wave at) the LYNX Blue Line

The light rail runs right through this part of Uptown, and trust me—every toddler lights up when they see it glide by. You can catch it at 7th Street Station for a quick, fun ride—or just let the kids wave in excitement as it passes. We personally love hopping on the train into the city; it’s such an easy way to skip the parking stress and make the day feel like a little adventure right from the start!
