There’s nothing quite like the squishy, heart-melting love between grandparents and their grandbabies. From the way they snuggle a newborn to the special bond that grows with each passing year, grandparents add a layer of love that’s pure magic. They bring wisdom, stories, and the kind of hugs that make everything feel right in the world. These moments—whether it’s a first cuddle, a playful giggle, or a quiet handhold—are the ones you’ll want to hold onto forever. Because the love of a grandparent isn’t just felt in the moment—it’s a gift that lasts a lifetime.

As a newborn photographer in Charlotte, NC, I witness the magic of including grandparents in newborn sessions. These moments radiate tenderness, pride, and overwhelming joy. I always encourage families to bring grandparents to their sessions. The bond they share with their grandchildren is special—something worth capturing and remembering forever.
Grandparent Love: A Connection That Spans Generations
Few things compare to the way a grandparent gazes at their grandchild for the first time. Their love runs deep, unconditional, and rooted in a lifetime of experiences. Watching their family grow brings them pure joy. Including grandparents in a newborn session preserves this connection and creates a lasting legacy for future generations.
Recently, I photographed a wonderful Charlotte family welcoming their baby boy. Their five-year-old daughter, thrilled to meet her baby brother, filled the studio with excitement. Both grandmothers attended, making the session even more special.
Seeing these two incredible women hold their grandson felt heartwarming. Their eyes sparkled with pride, their smiles radiated pure joy, and their gentle touches spoke of years of love. Their bond with their granddaughter was just as beautiful. They shared whispered conversations, warm hugs, and moments of laughter. These are the moments that make family photography so meaningful.

Why You Should Include Grandparents in Your Newborn Session
Newborn sessions capture love in its purest form. Few relationships showcase unconditional love as beautifully as the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren. A grandfather’s protective arms around his tiny grandchild or a grandmother’s gentle kiss on a newborn’s forehead create timeless, heartfelt images. These moments tell a deeper story. They aren’t just photos; they become treasured visual memories.
Grandparents serve as a bridge between generations. They carry family traditions, stories, and values. Including them in a newborn session honors their legacy and creates images that future generations will cherish. Imagine your child looking back at these photos, seeing the hands that once held them, the faces that adored them, and the love surrounding them from the very beginning.
Newborns stay this tiny for such a short time. While there will always be opportunities to capture moments with parents and siblings, including grandparents in these early days isn’t always guaranteed. Life moves quickly, making these moments even more meaningful. Professional portraits with grandparents ensure you always have a tangible memory of just how loved your baby was from the start.
Bringing grandparents into a newborn session strengthens the sense of family unity. It allows them to feel included in one of their grandchild’s most important moments. This experience deepens their relationship and gives them the chance to express their love in a way that lasts forever.
At my Waxhaw studio, I welcome grandparents into newborn sessions as part of my Platinum Newborn Session. Parents who want to include them can count on a comfortable, natural setup to ensure these moments are beautifully captured.

How to Prepare for a Grandparent-Inclusive Newborn Session
Planning ahead makes the experience smooth and meaningful. Letting grandparents know what to expect helps them feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. I recommend soft, neutral clothing, which photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on the emotions and connections in each image.
I love capturing both posed and candid moments. While traditional family portraits have their place, the most cherished images often come from natural interactions. Grandparents cradling their grandbaby, sharing a quiet smile, or holding tiny fingers with love tell a deeper, emotional story.
To ensure every session reflects the family’s vision, I ask parents to share the most important images they’d love to see in their final gallery. With years of experience photographing grandparents, I offer thoughtful suggestions. These include full family portraits, generational photos featuring grandparents with their children and grandchildren, individual grandparent-and-baby portraits, and sweet sibling moments with grandparents watching on with love. A variety of portraits helps create a timeless collection of memories.

A Smooth & Relaxed Session Flow with Grandparents
When grandparents join a newborn session, I structure the flow to keep the experience enjoyable for everyone. We begin with all the family portraits, capturing a mix of images with and without grandparents. This ensures we document those special multi-generational moments while allowing grandparents to leave afterward if they prefer.
Once we transition to the newborn-only portion, I create a calm and relaxed environment. At this stage, only mom and one additional adult remain in the studio. This setup lets mom unwind while I focus on capturing those sweet, sleepy newborn images. Having grandparents present at the start makes the session even easier for families with older siblings. Once their photos are done, grandparents can take them out for some one-on-one time. This makes the session more enjoyable for parents and little ones alike.

Grandparent Love: The Heart of Family Memories
One of my favorite moments from this Charlotte family’s session was watching the grandmothers take turns holding their grandson. They whispered to him, smiled down at his tiny face, and held him close with overwhelming love. Their granddaughter watched, soaking in every moment and learning the meaning of love, family, and connection.
Grandparents also helped create a bonus set of images that the parents and I adored! With their guidance, their granddaughter finally got to stand up and hold her new brother. Both grandmothers stood beside her, helping support him in her arms. It was a beautiful moment filled with love and encouragement.
These moments make newborn sessions extraordinary. They go beyond beautiful photos and capture love in its purest form. The tenderness, joy, and quiet connection between generations create memories that will be cherished forever.
