Questions to Ask Before Booking a Charlotte 3D Ultrasound Appointment
While elective ultrasounds can be a joyful bonding moment, they aren’t a replacement for medical scans. Here are a few questions I always encourage expecting mamas to consider before choosing a studio:
What’s the difference between 2D, 3D, 4D, and HD Live ultrasound?
It can be confusing!
- 2D shows traditional black-and-white images (used for most medical scans).
- 3D adds surface detail for lifelike still images.
- 4D adds motion—think baby yawning or stretching in real time.
- HD Live is a newer, more detailed version of 4D with even better clarity and lighting.

How early can I come in for a gender reveal?
Many centers offer gender scans as early as 14–16 weeks. It’s best to check the studio’s policy and accuracy rate at earlier stages.
When is the best time for those adorable face shots?
Most providers recommend booking your ultrasound between 26 and 32 weeks. That’s when baby’s features are developed but they still have enough room to move around. 💡 Tip from a photographer: As for maternity photos, I typically recommend booking your maternity session around the start of your second trimester so we can reserve your ideal date. We usually plan to photograph you between 28 and 33 weeks, depending on how you’re carrying. If this is your first pregnancy, your body might take a little longer to “pop,” so later in that window is usually ideal. For mamas on their second, third, or fourth journey—or those experiencing medical complications—we may photograph a bit earlier while you’re still comfortable and glowing. Ready to plan? Reach out!
What if baby is hiding or facing the wrong way?
It happens more often than you’d think! Many centers offer complimentary rescan appointments if they can’t get good images on the first try.
💡 Tip from me to you: I always recommend my maternity clients bring a little something sweet to eat—if your doctor approves—as you head into your appointment. A small burst of sugar (like juice or a fruit snack) can sometimes help a baby perk up and flip into a better position.

How long does the session last?
Sessions typically range from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the package. Be sure to ask how much time you’ll have and whether it includes time for rescan if needed.
What happens if they can’t get clear images?
I hear this one a LOT from parents – and especially AFTER they have gone to their ultrasound. So this is one questions I highly recommend asking each Charlotte 3D Ultrasound provider. Some providers will offer a partial refund, others will let you return for a second attempt. It’s always a good idea beforehand—especially if you’re close to the third trimester when space gets tighter.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay?
Some elective studios do accept HSA/FSA cards even though they’re non-diagnostic. It’s worth asking—especially if you’re booking multiple sessions or deluxe packages.

Important Considerations Before Booking a Charlotte 3D Ultrasound
Elective vs. Medical: These businesses provide elective ultrasounds meant for bonding and entertainment—not diagnostic use. They should always be in addition to your medically recommended scans.
Documentation: Some studios may ask for proof that you’ve already had a medical ultrasound before they’ll proceed.
Sonographer Experience: Ask about the training and experience of the person performing the scan.
Packages + Pricing: Compare what’s included—prints, digital files, heartbeat animals, rescan policies—to find what works best for you.
