A Sweet Safari-Styled Wild One Cake Smash in Charlotte

Planning a first birthday session is such a special way to celebrate your baby’s first year, and this wild one cake smash in my Waxhaw studio was the sweetest way to mark the occasion. As a Charlotte first birthday photographer, I love designing sessions that feel personal to each family, and this safari-inspired theme was extra meaningful because it matched the theme from mama’s baby shower.

Each Supreme cake smash session in my Waxhaw studio is designed to capture your baby’s milestone in a complete and relaxed way. These sessions typically include three to four parts, allowing us to document a variety of moments while keeping the experience fun and baby-led.

Milestone Portraits

We begin with a milestone setup, where we photograph sweet, classic portraits of your little one. These images focus on your baby’s personality and expressions, creating timeless photos parents love.

Families are welcome to bring their own outfit, or you can choose from pieces in my client closet, which includes adorable options designed specifically for babies and milestone portraits.

Customized Smash Setup:  Like This Wild One Cake Smash

Next, we move to the themed cake smash setup. Before the cake even comes out, we capture a few portraits of your baby sitting in the themed set so you have clean images that highlight the design and their personality.  Then it’s time to bring in the cake and let the smash fun begin — with frosting-covered fingers, curious tastes, and plenty of smiles.

For this wild one cake smash, we created a safari-inspired setup filled with friendly jungle animals and soft greenery to bring the theme to life. Since mama used a similar safari theme for her baby shower, recreating it for her son’s first birthday made the session feel like such a meaningful full-circle moment.

The birthday boy loved exploring the set and interacting with the cake. Watching little ones discover frosting for the first time is always the most giggly moments — the curious pokes, messy hands, and big smiles make for the sweetest photos.

Optional Splash Session

Many families also choose to finish the session with the optional splash bath. For water-loving babies, this is often their favorite part of the session.  They can splash and play in my little studio tub, and it’s also a wonderful reset for babies who may be a bit hesitant about the cake. The water play often brings out big giggles while helping clean up after the smash.

Together, these parts create a relaxed experience that captures both the sweet and playful sides of your baby’s first birthday milestone.

When to Book Your Wild One Cake Smash in Charlotte

Timing makes a big difference for a successful cake smash. I typically recommend scheduling your baby’s session when they are 10½–11 months old. At this age, most babies are sitting confidently, showing personality, and still comfortable with someone new — before the “stranger danger” phase begins.

Booking a bit before their first birthday also allows families the time to select the final gallery images to use the photos for invitations, party décor, or simply to celebrate this special milestone.
